The New Thor Movie Is GREAT, But…

Rejoice! There is a new Marvel superhero movie in theatres and it IS awesome! Thor: Ragnarok debuted with a box office haul of $121 million which puts it right above Spider-Man: Homecoming and right below Spider-Man 3 in terms of opening box office earnings.

The movie IS great, but there is one big problem. And no, it’s not the fact that they cut Chris Hemsworth’s hair.

Thor: Norse God Vs. Sci-Fi Superhero
What is really cool about Thor vs. the other Avengers characters [talking current Marvel Cinematic Universe, not the deeper, wider, wilder world of comics] is Thor’s mythological connection. The other super heroes are more or less regular human dudes that gain powers one way or another. Thor on the other hand is a Norse God, son of Odin, brother of mythical trickster Loki. It’s a rich world with so many cool elements to pull from for plot ideas.

But in the current movie, Thor’s connection to his mythical roots dims darker and darker until it’s nearly non-existent. There’s the death of his father, Odin. Then Thor’s iconic hammer, Mjolnir is destroyed. And finally Asgard, Thor’s world, is literally blown to smithereens, turning Thor and the Asgardians into refugees aboard a spaceship in search of a new world.

Thor Has Changed

The Thor-as-space-hero direction may be important for the upcoming Avengers: Infinity Wars, but it’s sad to say goodbye to the Thor of Norse legend. Just about any super hero could have a cyber space, sci-fi, story path (flesh out Planet Hulk, guys), and very few have the history and roots that Thor has to pull from for intruding, larger-than-life story ideas.

To Sum Up

New Thor is cool, but old Thor will be missed.

Oh well. At least he’s got his cool helmet now.
