It’s not often these days that moms are surprised by their baby’s gender. Ultrasounds have taken away the mystery of whether it will be a girl or a boy. In this case, the photo says it all.

Koto Nakamura and her husband, Sina Niakansafy, had an ultrasound earlier in the pregnancy that had told them the baby they were expecting was a girl.

They’d enjoyed an influx of pink gifts and girly baby showers leading up to the birth. They even chose a name – Hinata.

“I was shocked”

There’s a reason that most doctors won’t guarantee gender, though. We all know at least one friend that was surprised on delivery day.

“We were all laughing and joking about it, saying, ‘Oh gosh, as if that would happen to us,'” said Nakamura’s birth photographer, Jessica Jackson. “We were trying to imagine how the mother must have felt — little did we know it was about to happen to Koto, too.”

Thank goodness they had hired a birth photographer because that is the absolute best picture to have one day when they tell baby Taiga, which means “big and gracious” in Japanese, the story of how he was born. To have that moment of surprise that it’s a boy, captured perfectly, is priceless.

As for how long it took to sink in, Nakamura told Today, “I was shocked for a few seconds, and then it didn’t matter if it was a girl or a boy.”
