The Greatest Moment From The Garth Brooks Shows In Winnipeg

Garth Brooks put on four shows in Winnipeg this past weekend. Before he took the stage at MTS Centre, he was kind enough to make time for local media who requested interviews. Below is my one-on-one with Garth Brooks where he talks about his country music idols, the one musician HE wishes he could be, and describes exactly where he was the very first time he heard his favourite Trisha Yearwood song, years before the couple were married.

The Story Behind The Interview

This next section of the post is all about the reason why meeting Garth Brooks was extra special for me.

I have been playing the fiddle for almost 25 years. I was given my very first violin by my Granny. One day she and my papa asked me “If you could play any instrument in the world, what would you play?” After thinking real hard about that question, I could hear a beautiful melody in my head. It was the opening fiddle part of the George Strait song, Amarillo By Morning. So I asked for a fiddle and was surprised shortly after that when my granny and papa showed up at my parents house with my very first violin.

Many great things have come to my life because of music. Practicing that violin taught me discipline. The excitement that would come when you started playing a song and it actually sounded the way it was supposed to is an indescribable rush! Performing on stage helped build my confidence which ultimately moved me in the direction of a career in media. Long story short, music is very important to me, and it can all be traced back to Amarillo By Morning.

In the interview above I ask Garth about George Strait. He mentions that if there’s anyone he could be, it’d be George Strait.

Fast forward to the second last show of the concert. Every song up to that point had just been amazing. By the end of a Garth show, he basically just starts jamming. Playing whatever songs come to mind. Suddenly, I recognize a familiar chord progression and Garth launches into a story. He talks about how he had the chance to meet some local media beforehand. And that one guy he was talking with got him going about George Strait, and since that chat he’d been wanting to play a particular George Strait song. Next thing I know, Garth launches into a song that means more to me than any other song written! It was my introduction to music, which gave me so many great gifts in life! As if that wasn’t enough, when Garth finishes off that first first, my favourite fiddle player of all time, Jimmy Mattingly, joins Garth on stage and plays that beautiful fiddle part!

I was SO happy to find out that my sister managed to record the last little bit of that song on her phone. Hearing that song, played that way, it sounded better than any tune I’ve ever heard performed live before! Hearing Garth Brooks playing Amarillo By Morning, was hands-down the best concert moment of my entire life. I will never forget it.
