A monthly look at what’s scheduled to be added to the catalogues of streaming services Netflix Canada, Shomi and CraveTV

TOP PICKS

The second season of Netflix’s hit cartel-crime drama “Narcos” premieres Friday with time running out for Pablo Escobar, played by Golden Globe-nominated Wagner Moura. Spoiler alert: the streaming service isn’t hiding the fact that the Colombian drug lord will be killed before the second season is through.

On Sept. 24, Shomi will release the third season of the award-winning series “Transparent,” starring Jeffrey Tambor as a transgender woman. In a trailer for the new season, Tambor’s character announces at a family dinner that she no longer wants to be referred to as “Moppa” (an amalgam of Mom and Poppa) and instead wants to be called Mom — which doesn’t immediately go over so well. The series has won five Emmys and two Golden Globes.

On Friday, CraveTV launches the critically acclaimed four-part miniseries “Roots,” a remake of the 1977 miniseries of the same name. Based on the novel “Roots: The Saga of an American Family” by Alex Haley, the TV series tells the story of an African teenager sold into slavery and traces the lives of his descendants in the United States.
