Leonardo DiCaprio Bringing Captain Planet To The Big Screen?

In the 80s and early 90s there was no shortage of cartoons that were designed to sell us action figures. One endeavoured to also teach us the importance of the environment and taking care of planet Earth (and selling action figures that ALSO came with sweet power rings). Captain Planet and the Planeteers was a unique cartoon during it’s two-year run and Leonardo DiCaprio may want to bring it to the big screen.

He’s Our Hero

The Hollywood Reporter says DiCaprio’s film company Appian Way Productions is trying to lock down the rights for this cartoon series with the hopes of brining it to a new generation of Planeteers. This is a nice fit for DiCaprio who is a United Nations Messenger of Peace for climate change. DiCaprio became particularly concerned with climate change after filming the movie the Revenant. The film struggled to find appropriate shooting locations after scouting locations that were known to be snowy but were ultimately too warm and melted to capture the frigid atmosphere.

Do We Need This?

Of all the cartoons to remake do we want to see a new Captain Planet? Reboots of Gem and The Holograms, Ninja Turtles, and Transformers haven’t exactly been fan favourites. If you were to see a cartoon from your childhood get a remake into a big screen film, what cartoon would it be? In the meantime, here’s a spoof from Funny Or Die of Don Cheadle as the green-haired hero!
