You Can Do It…But Should You?

What do you like to do for exercise? Have you figured out a great routine, class, or piece of workout equipment that you have mastered and love doing? If you’re still enjoying your workout that’s awesome! But if you dread going to the gym, or frequently find yourself being bored at the gym, it could be time to increase your workout intensity!

Should I Amp Up, Or Slow Down?

Tania Tetrault Vrga is a fitness expert and owner of Crossfit Winnipeg. She says it’s important to recognize if you’re working out at the right level to achieve your fitness goals, but you want to avoid pushing yourself too far and injuring yourself. Here are a few things to look for in your current exercises so you can decide if it’s time to dial things up or slow things down.

If you are plateauing and notice your running speed or time isn’t improving, you’re not lifting more, and you’re not working out for longer periods of time it could be time to step things up and try a more intense workout. A good way to get outside of your comfort zone is to sign up for a class so you can try out some new moves and exercises or book a session with a personal trainer.

If you are sore that’s probably just a sign of an intense workout. As long as your muscle soreness fades as you start moving around and going about your day then you’re probably okay. If the soreness in your muscles gets worse as the day goes on, or you notice soreness in your joins (knees, hips, ankles) you’re probably exercising too hard and should dial things back.

If you are light-headed, feel numbness in your limbs, or shooting pains during your workout, this isn’t a sign you’re feeling the burn, it’s a sign you’re going too hard!
