Meet Max

Max is a wildlife ambassador at Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre located south of Winnipeg in Ile des Chenes. Wildlife Haven’s mission since it was founded in 1984 has been to rehabilitate injured, sick, or orphaned wildlife so they can return back to the wild. Some animals are brought to the centre and their unique injuries don’t allow them to be released back to the wild. Max fell out of a tree when he was just a baby and ended up being unable to be returned to the wild, but his patient temperament made him a perfect candidate to become a wildlife ambassador for the centre. Now, Max tours around to schools and community events to educate people about wild animals in Manitoba and what they should do if they find an injured one.

Recently, Max (with a little help) authored a book about Manitoba wildlife and some of the interesting animals that have made their way through Wildlife Haven. It’s packed with great photos and fun facts about some of the furry, feathered, and scaled friends that you’ll find here in our province.

Did You Know: The feathered patterns of Great Horned Owls allow them to stay camouflaged during the day when they’re asleep in trees.

Copies of the book are available through Chapters, McNally Robinson’s, or by contacting Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre. They’re a great read to have handy on the family bookshelf so everyone in the house can learn about the beautiful animals we have living in our province.

Help Max And His Friends

Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre is always busy, but during the spring they’re extra busy with all the baby animals that end up being turned over to their care. If you want to help with their efforts, there are lots of ways to get involved:

  • Donations of purred, fruit, baby food are needed now to feed woodpeckers in preparation for migration season
  • Book a visit with the centre’s Education Program in your child’s school or in your community
  • Volunteer at Wildlife Haven
  • Help them reach their goal to finish constructing a new facility for their patients and programming
