Do you ever wonder if your expired food has really expired? PhD student Khengdauliu Chawang of Southern Methodist University has invented a sensor that determines if something has actually gone bad.

The food sensor reports a food’s pH levels. pH levels are higher when food has spoiled. The invention has already been tested on fruit, fish, and milk.

“The need to prevent food waste motivated me to think of a device that is not expensive or labour-intensive to develop, is disposable and can detect freshness levels,” Chawang said.
