In honour of it being October 3rd, AKA, ‘Mean Girls Day’, we thought we would share some facts about the movie.

  1. Screenplay by Tina Fey: The script for “Mean Girls” was written by Tina Fey, who is best known for her work on “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock.” She also played Ms. Norbury, a math teacher, in the film.
  2. Based on a Book: The movie is loosely based on the self-help book “Queen Bees and Wannabes” by Rosalind Wiseman, which provides advice for parents on the high school social cliques and the damaging effects they can have on girls.
  3. Directed by Mark Waters: Mark Waters directed the film, and he later went on to direct other popular movies, including “Freaky Friday” and “Mr. Popper’s Penguins.”
  4. Star-Studded Cast: The movie helped launch the careers of several young actresses including Lindsay Lohan (Cady Heron), Rachel McAdams (Regina George), Amanda Seyfried (Karen Smith), and Lacey Chabert (Gretchen Wieners).
  5. Cult Status: “Mean Girls” quickly achieved cult status and has remained popular with audiences since its release. The film’s memorable quotes and scenes have become iconic in pop culture.
  6. “Fetch”: Gretchen Wieners’ attempt to make “fetch” happen is one of the movie’s most famous lines. It’s used to denote something that’s cool or trendy.
  7. October 3rd: In the movie, Aaron Samuels (played by Jonathan Bennett) asks Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) what day it is, to which she replies, “It’s October 3rd.” This day has since been celebrated by fans as “Mean Girls Day.”
  8. Broadway Adaptation: “Mean Girls” was turned into a Broadway musical in 2018, with Tina Fey adapting her screenplay for the stage. The musical’s songs were written by Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin.
  9. Location: Despite the film being set in the suburbs of Chicago, it was primarily filmed in Toronto, Canada.
  10. Multiple Awards: The movie received multiple nominations and awards, including those from the MTV Movie Awards, Teen Choice Awards, and the People’s Choice Awards.

“Mean Girls” is known for its wit, humour, and insights into high school dynamics, and it continues to be a favourite among audiences, even years after its initial release.
