Le Burger Week

The beginning of September is a HUGE week in Winnipeg. No, we’re not talking about back to school. We are talking le Burger Week! This tradition has been in our city for four years where restaurant’s across the city craft special recipes as they compete to try and make Winnipeg’s best burger. Nuburger has been the reigning champ for years, but with almost SIXTY burgers on menus across the city there is a lot of competition out there!

Bite Mi

Eraj is the executive chef at the Fairmont Winnipeg. Their restaurant, The Velvet Glove, have put together this amazing burger with a beef, shrimp, and chorizo patty with spicy and sweet sauces that is just unreal! Nesta and Drew got to do some preliminary taste testing of the Bite Mi and shared their feedback with the chef to help perfect the final recipe. Take a look at the video below to see how this masterpiece comes together.

3 Simple Rules For A Perfect Burger

Chef Eraj shared some of HIS tips to keep in mind the next time you’re trying to make the perfect burger at home:

  1. Don’t overwork the patty. Whatever kind of meet or veggies you use, don’t feel the need to mash these things into perfect little pucks. The meat should have some texture and crumble to it. That only happens when you don’t mash and squeeze your burger patties to look like the perfectly-formed burger patties you see at fast food restaurants.
  2. Trust your gut. If you like sweets, throw some beets or pineapples on your burger. If you’re a fan of salt, load on that bacon-goodness. Or try fusing flavours to get spicy/sweet combos. The best recipes can be discovered when you’re willing to go with your guy and try something new.
  3. Big burgers are great…but. Don’t overload your burger. It’s easy to get carried away and want to throw garlic sausage and pork belly, and deep fried pickles all on top of your patty, but suddenly you’ve got a burger that no one can bite into. A large burger is great, but don’t make it so big that people have to take apart the ingredients and eat them separately just to fit them in their mouth.
